A few weeks ago I was at a school district wide meeting where teachers and parents came together for some frank conversation. A group of teachers representing multiple grade levels and subject matters presented to us (parents) a Teachers’ Wish List… It was the top 10 things teachers wished more parents would do at home to support their (the teachers’) efforts in the classroom. Now of course, standard things like checking homework folders daily, reading to your child and/or making them read every day and getting involved in school activities were among the things wished for. However one big wish Continue Reading

Ask yourself the question… What is the goal of education? Is it to gain specific knowledge and skills in order to get a good job or start a
business? Is it to learn how be social and civic minded so that you can make the world a better place? What about this one; education’s goal is to teach people essential interpersonal skills and tolerance so that they can form successful relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Or maybe, it’s more simplistic than that. Maybe, the goal of education is simply to help people attain their goals and realize their dreams. Continue Reading

Hello Family
Let me say at the onset of this posting that I am really not talking to necessarily to the readers of this blog…. I think I am preaching to the choir, as we say… but I do want to get my message out to those readers who do need to read it. So, please feel free to pass this along to those who may want or need to read it…
Earlier today I was reading a synopsis of a study on segregation in today’s schools. The study was conducted by UCLA and then commented on by Harvard University in a paper called “On Equality of Educational Opportunity.” A major finding in the report was stated as “When the performance of a child in school is adjusted for the educational and cultural level of his parents, there is nothing left for the school to effect.”
Now, at first glance my red flag ears as a parent perked up and I got a little offended… I said, “Well, then WHY did are you (those who work in schools) in education? Isn’t your job supposed to be “effect the change needed, inspite of the kid’s “cultural and educational level of his parents” ain’t that what you supposed to be doing? But then…. Continue Reading

Well, family the time has come. I am really a grandparent! LMBO Well, not actually, my brother is Pop, but with the birth of my niece’s son in May of this year, I have now joined the official ranks of our family elders; watching our children raise their children. As I write this, Nia and I are on a journey to meet Little Q and catch up with the rest of the family out west! You know me, (smile) I’m always thinking about educational media and technology and kids, so Continue Reading

Well Family, it’s that time of year again! Time to wind up the school year and gear up for summer! Whether your child is emailing, blogging, chatting, and profiling in all the social networks, it’s important to remember that kids are the most vulnerable when it comes to predators of all types on the internet. Be vigilant and active! Following are some tips for internet safety Continue Reading
